MONTA TANTO

Most of the versions of the same myth make Gordius (Mida’s father) the founder of the kingdom of Phrygia. Legend has it that an oracle took the Phrygians, tired of the struggles and the absence of royal power, which was never presented on a tank pulled by oxen. That is how Gordius presented himself to them. When he returned, Gordius founded the city of Gordion in gratitude and consecrated his chariot to Zeus. The chariot is tied to a pole ensuring its shaft with a knot so inextricable, so complex, the Gordian knot, that a prophecy was made, according to wich those who could untie the knot, would have become sovereign of the universe. Centuries later, the city priests to Alexander the Great telling him the legend that the knot was canceled would be the master of Asia. The challenge is up to the task: no one has ever succeeded. With a broad gesture, Alessandro cuts the strings with a sword stroke. “It doesn’t matter the way it is untied” (= tanto monta atar como desatar)), he exclaims in a prophetic tone. Disconcerted, the priests recognize Alexander as the future master of Asia. The Gordian Knot has been tried to use a difficult problem. The knot holds hands to the world, eyes to the earth, the body to the other bodies. Remember the complexity, the work, the slowness, the minuteness, the patience, the elaboration, the hand (of the fisherman, of the craftsman). Without knots it is difficult to conceive stitching, weaving. Accounting was done with knots, the structure of the world was reproduced with knots, things and events were remembered, languages were created: mathematics, astronomy. The cut, on the contrary, is the speed, the acceleration, the colonization, the accelerated escape from the body, the predatory man, the imperialism, the HYBRIS. Cutting is denying. MONTA TANTO talks about this escape, the escape from the body since the human being is human, after we have rejected our animal side and we name the rest of living beings classifying them. MONTA TANTO is the story of time kidnapped very far from ourselves, of a speed of gadgets, of a virtual hurricane of a society that constantly invites us to escape from our flesh. MONTA TANTO is also the story of the conquests, of the destruction of ancestral civilizations. It is the story of Hybris, of Icarus who chooses speed and who falls with his wax wings. MONTA TANTO, the last part of the Alexandrian motto adopted by Ferdinand, the Catholic king, , is above all an elegy to the wild world. The body, our body, which we constantly try to flee. A body fossilized 40000 years ago surround by thousand of digital gadgets inviting the body to escape from itself. History as the distance in between the place we live and the place where ours lives are decided.Hybris, speed, multiplication. Conquerors do not have time, they go extremely fast. The meticulous Gordian knot Vs. the impatience of a whole Alexandrian system. MONTA TANTO is a experimental performance about the effects of capitalism on our bodies and societies. Based on the essay by Santiago Alba Rico, “To be or not to be (a body)”, it explores the distance between our bodies in our daily society, the dehumanization of a system that does not care anymore for the individual, the destruction of what was constructed during centuries meticulously. MONTA TANTO talks about the conquerors destroying ancient civilizations in America, it is an elegy to wildness and a whole abstract research of the creation of new ways to cohabit.
